No Gay Marriage Proposition for 2010 Colorado Election
Published: 10/16/2009 by Bill Wheeler
I've been meaning to post on this for a couple of weeks. You may recall that a guy (straight) started a petition last February to legalize gay marriage in Colorado. The amendment was to appear on the November, 2010 Colorado ballot.
Well, that petition has failed. See this article from the Denver Post:
Stu Allen describes himself as "a 23-year-old kid who just got (ticked) off watching the news" about California voters overturning that state's Supreme Court ruling that same-sex marriage was a constitutional right.
"Calling themselves "Yes on Equal Rights," he and his girlfriend, Crystal Russell, 22, relied on Google searches and the how-to guide on the Secretary of State's website to launch an initiative to put same-sex marriage on the 2010 ballot.
The initiative officially failed late last month for lack of money and signatures."
I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm definitely disappointed. There was some indication that the amendment had a fighting chance in 2010, although 2012 would be better. In any event, it won't be a ballot issue next year. And unless there is a better organized effort, there won't be one in 2012 either.
Any volunteers interested in working on this issue for 2012? Maybe we can get something started....
